The PlayStation 3 is finally living up to its motto, “It only does everything.” After fumbling around with a low quality disc for months, Netflix users on the PS3 gaming console are finally getting a disc-less version of the popular movie subscription service so that they can fully take advantage of Netflix’s famed “watch instantly” feature. As an added bonus, that feature is scheduled to come to users by the end of the month, which is just in time to make Halloween scary movie marathons a reality.
The “watch instantly” feature on Netflix allowed users to watch movies as it streams, much like how YouTube and Hulu function, rather than having to download the movie first or wait for the physical disc to arrive in the mail. Netflix’s sizeable “watch instantly” library, packed with hundreds of movies and television shows, made it one of the service’s most popular features. However, when Netflix first introduced its service to PS3 users last October, it required users to insert a special Blu-ray disc into their consoles each time they wanted to use the “watch instantly” feature of the subscription service. While this was not necessarily a huge burden, it did ruffle the feathers of some of the PS3 and Netflix’s most loyal users. Considering the fact that the Xbox 360, the PS3′s main competitor, also has Netflix capabilities but does not need the cumbersome disc, it is understandable why PS3 users have been demanding a disc-less version of Netflix as well. And now, after a full year, it seems that they are finally getting just that.
PlayStation LifeStyle, a comprehensive website featuring the latest news about PlayStation systems, reported that a disc-less Netflix application will be released before the end of the month. The app, which is already available in Canada, will allow users to nix the disc and utilize the “watch instantly” feature directly from their consoles. This will not only boost PS3′s rank in comparison to its Xbox 360 competitor, but it will also ensure that users will not run the risk of damaging their Blu-ray discs from the constant wear and tear of swapping between gaming and movie watching. In addition, Netflix should end up saving money by switching to an all-digital platform for its “watch instantly” feature because the company would no longer have to constantly replace the Blu-ray discs that inevitably become damaged. So, rejoice, PS3 Netflix users a disc-less future is coming soon!
