As luck would have it, Charlie finds the last golden ticket and goes on this once-in-a-lifetime adventure with his grandpa Joe. Among the other four winners are Veruca Salt, a spoiled rich girl; Augustus Gloop, a gluttonous kid who stuffs his face with sweets; Violet Beuragarde, a champion trophy gum chewer; and Mike Teavee, a kid who spends more time watching TV and playing video games than anything else. Also along the tour are Wonka’s staff the singing, working Oommpa Loompas
8. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
An infinitely rewatchable comedy classic, Monty Python and the Holy Grail is a cult and pop culture touchpoint for several generations of fans since its intial 1975 theatrical release. Skewering the legend of King Arthur with nonstop jokes and ridiculous situations, Holy Grail tackles everything from the Knights of the Round Table, including “Sir Lancelot” (John Cleese) and “Sir Robin the Not Quite So Brave As Sir Lancelot” (Eric Idle), to a killer rabbit (defeated by the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch) and the Black Knight (Cleese), who refuses to give up even when all his limbs have been hacked off by Arthur (Graham Chapman).
7. The Dark Crystal (1982)
Jim Henson’s dark, magical fairytale world comes alive for the first time in 1982′s Dark Crystal. The film may have come as somewhat of a surprise to fans of The Muppets, expecting more of the cute and cuddly creations Henson was known for. Instead, Henson (along with co-director Frank Oz) offered up Crystal’s nightmarish dream world, drawing influences from Tolkien to classical fairytales. Henson also pushed puppetry to a new level, quickly making audiences forget that these felt-covered creatures were being controlled by puppeteers off-set. Crystal is an unforgettable, timeless classic.
6. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King (2003)
While Frodo & Sam continue to approach Mount Doom to destroy the One Ring, unaware of the path Gollum is leading them, the former Fellowship aid Rohan & Gondor in a great battle in the Pelennor Fields, Minas Tirith and the Black Gates as Sauron wages his last war against Middle-Earth.
5. King Kong (1933)
“It was beauty that felled the beast.” These are the final lines of dialogue spoken in Merian C. Cooper’s 1933 film about a giant ape and his doomed love affair with a starlet, and they only scratch the surface of King Kong’s profound depths. An effects movie in a time where effects were nonexistent, Cooper’s film proved to be the Jurassic Park of its day if for no other reason than its technological innovation, but remains a classic today not because of the wonderful stop-motion animation work, but its ability to render Kong as one of the silver screen’s most tragic figures. Peter Jackson is scheduled to offer his own updated remake later this year, but there’s no beauty that will fell man or beast better than this magnificent movie.
4. Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
This 1963 classic is a rousing epic adventure based on the ancient Greek myth. The story follows the legendary Greek hero as he leads a group of adventurers on a quest for the coveted Golden Fleece. The film was directed by Don Chaffey with groundbreaking effects by the legendary Ray Harryhausen. The movie is known for its fantastic creatures like the Hydra, those freaky-looking harpies, the giant Talso, and the skeleton warriors. The sweeping fantasy story is backed by a classic score from composer Bernard Herrmann.
3. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
Frodo and Sam take Gollum prisoner and continue on to Mordor on the mission to destroy The One Ring. Whilst their former companions Strider, Legolas, Gimli, Merry and Pippin make new allies in the Ents, The Riders of Rohan and the Stewards of Gondor and launch an assault on Isengard. All the while a growing Shadow falls upon Middle-earth as the Dark Lord’s Army marches on to Gondor. The War of the Ring has begun.
2. The Princess Bride (1987)
When a young boy falls ill, his grandfather pops round to visit him. To cheer his grandson up, Grandpa has brought a storybook; The Princess Bride, a tale of the love between the beautiful Buttercup and the besotted Westley, a love cruelly interrupted by Westley’s tragic apparent death at sea when seeking his fortune. Heartbroken, Buttercup has sworn never to love again, but accepts the marriage proposal of the rich and handsome Prince Humperdinck, heir to the throne of Florin; but death is no barrier to true love, and in a story filled with exotically-accented swordsmen, big-hearted giants, genius kidnappers, sadistic torturers, vile swamps, Rodents of Unusual Size, the Dread Pirate Roberts and a somewhat embittered miracle worker, the love between Westley and Buttercup twists and turns on a path filled with adventure. Will the True Love of Westley and Buttercup win the day? Will Inigo Montaya find the six-fingered man who murdered his father? Will Humperdinck’s evil plans come to fruition? And, more importantly, will Grandpa be able to tell the story without any of the yucky kissing?
1. The Wizard of Oz (1939)
