The Beastie Boys rarely do things by the book. Even after the heights of ‘Hello Nasty’, the band suddenly started talking up a forthcoming country album. ‘I’ll believe it when I see it’, most people opined. Turns out, it was true anyway: there were country tracks on ‘The Sounds of Science’. But we love them for this kind of stuff.
From this fine pedigree, the Beastie Boys are making sure we’re well and truly confused about just what we’re in for when their next album release. Does ‘Hot Sauce Committee Part One’ actually exist? We know that Part Two is on the way before Part One, but the confusing history of which tracks are on which album isn’t even worth trying to unravel here. May 3rd is the date that we’ll finally get the album pumping through our speakers. And the first single, ‘Make Some Noise’ is already available for download with an imminently available Vinyl out there too. I NEED this thing, so excuse me as I go and Apply for Credit Card.
But all this is window-dressing after the band announced the upcoming short movie ‘Fight For Your Right Revisited’. From a technical perspective, the 2 minute trailer that has been circling YouTube and the entertainment blogs qualifies as ‘Ill’. Not, not merely ‘sick’. Remember the music video to ‘(You gotta) Fight For Your Right (To Party)’? Well, this short film is set in the morning after that party, poking fun at the 25 years that haven’t treated the Beastie Boys so very kindly. It features Will Ferrel, Jack Black and John C.Reilly as present day Beastie Boys facing off against Seth Rogan, Danny McBride and Elijah Wood play their more youthful counterparts. The parents from the ‘Fight for your Right’ video are apparently being parodied by Stanley Tucci and the lovely Susan Sarandon. No hint of a bad credit visible anywhere.
Unperformed at concerts for most of their popularity (they claim they wrote it in five minutes out of necessity), the song is an interesting choice for the Beastie Boys to ‘revisit’. They argue that the song was supposed to be ironic, and that it ended up being taken as the real deal. They claim that the song was a parody of the jock rock stylings of Twisted Sister and the Motley Crue, and a commentary on the kinds of people who listened to that particularly ’80s’ rock music.
