1. Saving Private Ryan (1998)

This film is a fictional telling of the Battle of Guadalcanal during World War II. Director Terrence Malick spent 20 years researching the subject. Denzel Washington made his directorial debut with this drama based on the true story of American soldier Antwone Fisher who confronts his disturbing past to a Naval psychologist. Denzel Washington starred in the film along with newcomers Derek Luke and Joy Bryant.
7. Courage Under Fire (1996)
This is one of the first films to depict the 1991 Gulf War. The film follows a Army Colonel sent to investigate the actions of a female Medevac Huey Commander to determine whether she should be the first woman to posthumously receive the Medal of Honor. 8. Flags of Our Fathers (2006)
This is a film adaptation of the book of the same name written by James Bradley and Ron Powers about the Battle of Iwo Jima and the men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. Clint Eastwood directed while William Broyles Jr and Paul Haggis wrote the screenplay. This film was well-received critically but underperformed at the box office. 9. Letters from Iwo Jima (2007)
This film is a follow-up companion to Flags of Our Fathers; it portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese soldiers; it is almost entirely in Japanese. Many magazine film critics named this the best film of 2006. The film stars Ken Watanabe, Kazunari Ninomiya and more.
