The Pirates of the Caribbean are back with some new faces
Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides features the returning Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow, the fourth offering of the movie franchise. The Walt Disney theme park ride turned movie franchise has consistently been a box office behemoth, grossing close to $3 billion worldwide in total. The newest offering, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, lacks familiar faces such as Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom and instead replaces them with veteran actors Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane. Captain Hector Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) also returns.
On Stranger Tides revolves around Jack Sparrow’s search for the mythical Fountain of Youth. The enigmatic Angelica Malon, Jack’s past love interest, joins in the search. Jack is joined in the search by the fearsome pirate Blackbeard, played by Ian McShane. A prophecy foretelling his death from a one-legged man compels Blackbeard and his crew of pirates and zombies to search for the Fountain. By coincidence, retired pirate Hector Barbossa sports a peg-leg to replace his lost limb. These characters will no doubt find their way on to new merchandise like t-shirts depicting Pirates of the Caribbean.
Brilliant shots of the beautiful and vibrant landscapes has always been a strength of the series. The tone and tempo of the back-and-forth action-adventure thriller is set by Depp, imagining Jack Sparrow as a smart, yet offbeat individual. Pirates of the Caribbean shirts reflect the actor’s importance to the movies with his face appearing on almost all of them. Depp has cited Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones as a source of inspiration for the character.
The franchise is planning on making a fifth and sixth film in the near future. The plan is for the fifth Pirates film to be a standalone project. Jack Sparrow as played by Johnny Depp will remain a fixture with the franchise, depending on Depp’s comfort level. The release of a video game based on On Stranger Tides was supposed to coincide with the movie, but development never took off, leaving t shirts featuring Pirates of the Caribbean on them as the main source of merchandising.
