A Scene From Apocalypse Now

Francis Ford Coppolla’s 1979 Vietnam War masterpiece Apocalypse Now is a long-lived favourite of many critics and fans alike. The movie simultaneously shows the social and cultural revolution of the times and the horrors of war in the 20th century. The film examines the frankly ridiculous nature of war, young men far from home killing and dying to a soundtrack of the Beach Boys.

Movies Capital

The film’s importance in the context of war movies cannot be underestimated. For once, death was not shown as a glorious act of bravery, but as the sickening and pointless waste that it is. No matter how great the direction, acting and cinematography, the film has had a huge impact on Music for TV and all types of media. With Apocalypse Now, Walter Murch and his team have earned the respect of generations of sound designers. In the opening scene, Willard hears the beating of helicopter rotors – a sound that permeated the conflict and acts as the unifying theme throughout the film. The audio layers of helicopter noises were made using synthesisers, to provide the control that was needed. The feelings of the young American men lost in the jungle are perfectly portrayed by the popular music blasting from radios throughout the movie. When American helicopters senselessly slaughter a village so they can surf, the bombastic sounds of Ride of the Valkyries create a real sense of the absurd, sick grandeur of war’s horror. There is fairground absurdity, distorted Doppler effects and the insanity of LSD, with originality never typically found in a music library. The distant mortars and gunfire almost disappear as Willard nears his goal, replaced by spooky and mystical jungle sounds and weird nature. Kurtz is finally killed like a sacrificial cow, like all soldiers sent to war? – as Kurtz finally falls to the sound of the Doors’ This is the End, he finally utters the words

“The horror, the horror.”

Next time you see Apocalypse Now, listen harder. This film stands alone in terms of its mastery and evolution of the art of sound design.
