Everything is covered in The Arts Desk’s film reviews this week from Norwegian trolls and sassy rom-coms to classic novels and film festivals.
Making waves at the Venice Film Festival are several young film-makers. Creating a stir among the critics is the mesmerising ‘Shame’ which won the award for Best Actor for Michael Fassbender’s riveting performance. Yorgos Lanthimos’s ‘Alps’ also drew attention as a tough watch that really makes its audience think while Andrea Arnold’s take on ‘WutheringHeights’, strongly divided opinion.
The Norwegian horror film ‘Troll Hunter’ is perhaps the most curious entry in this week’s film reviews. An amateur film crew are followed in the film as a mysterious ‘bear hunter’ is discovered in the wood, who lets them know about his real job as a troll exterminator. The Norwegian film has been a huge success in the country, and a Hollywood remake is already planned.
Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake star in ‘Friends with Benefits’, a Hollywood rom-com where two newly single friends try to keep their relationship to just sex. If a slice of Hollywood entertainment is what you’re after, the film serves well, and the two lead characters are likeable enough.
The new adaptation of Cary Joji Fukunaga’s ‘Jane Eyre’ is a true breath of fresh air and is by far the pick of the week’s movie releases. Man of the moment Michael Fassbender is a smouldering, magnetic Rochester, while Mia Wasikowska can indeed do plain and a little bit Northern. The film offers something new and invigorated as the novel has been drastically restructured.
Chronicling the history of cinema by focusing on the passion and innovative ideas that have driven the industry since its inception is Mark Cousin’s TV documentary ‘The Story of Film: An Odyssey’. Finally, Sam Price laments the proliferation in British film of sub-par urban gangster flicks – supposedly gritty street offerings with absurd plots that usually star Danny Dyer – in his opinion piece “Why can’t the British make urban movies?”
