“And I Love Her” has long been one of my favorite ballads by the legendary ’60s band. I’m writing today to share a closer look at this song for those who love the song as much as I do.
The song was the 5th track on side one of The Beatles 3rd album A Hard Day’s Night. This album is, of course, the soundtrack to the film by the same name. Most Beatles fans consider it to be a huge step forward and easily the best of the first 4 LPs. It’s also the only album to include only songs by John Lennon & Paul McCartney (this is mostly because later LPs include songs by George Harrison too.)
It is true that in some ways “And I Love Her” is a very repetitive simple song and one could certainly argue that the lyrics are kind of trite. But the melody is pretty enough and there’s enough subtle musical touches that the song is still a standout inspite of these things which could be considered weaknesses.
One thing that I think is interesting about this tune is how it goes into 4 different keysduring the song. This is because it sways back and forth between a major key and its relative minor through most of the song and then during Harrison’s guitar solo the key goes up a half-step and finishes there when Paul McCartney’s vocals come back in.
On the Anthology 1 CDs we hear an earlier version of the song that has a full rock band sound and does not have the tasty guitar riff that helps make the final version memorable. The difference between this version and the final version shows how a different arrangement can really make a song work.
As a cool final touch the song ends on the major version of the relative minor “1″ chord. In other words instead of the telegraphed D minor at the end it ends on a D major instead. The Beatles often added these little touches to their songs and that helped to set them apart from most other popular music.
Purchase The Beatles Stereo CD Box Set to hear this song and the rest of The Beatles catalog in remastered stereo. It sounds great.
