Acknowledged as one of the best composers in the early Renaissance, Guillaume Dufay (or Du Fay) was of Franco-Flemish ancestry. Dufay was born on August 5, 1397 in Brussels, probably in the Beersel area. As the most influential composer in the early Renaissance period, Dufay could compose in Italian, French, and Latin.
In Cambrai, where he lived with his mother in a relative’s house, Dufay was trained in music by Rogier de Hesdin. Incidentally, this relative was a canon of the cathedral in Cambrai and this gave him an exposure to a secular experience. He became a member of the choir of the cathedral in 1409- 1412. Most of Guillaume Dufay’s composition is in the northern French tradition. The expanse of his musical ability in his compositions covered a wide range of different scopes, both secular and humanist arts. Dufay wrote three- and four-part masses, hymns, motets, chants, Magnificats, sacred antiphons, rondeaux, ballades, and virelais. All of his sacred music is vocal and his chants were meant for liturgical use only. Dufay used a harmonization technique called fauxbourdon that he used in his Marian “Ave Maris Stella.” This style was famous and used in the 15th century liturgical music. Also, Guillaume’s secular music are in forms fixes of the 14th and 15th centuries. The songs of Dufay are intended for three voices dominated by the highest voice and the other voices were played by instruments. Dufay used polyphony in his works and is one of the last to use the isorhythm technique. He was the last one to use the isorhythm technique and he also used polyphony in his works. On his death (November 27, 1474), Guillaume Dufay’s motet “Ave Regina Celorum” was sung for him at his request learning perfect pitch
